The hotel industry is a fairly competitive one, especially in a popular tourist spot like the Atlantic City. You will find a large number of options for hotels but which one is the best, is the biggest question.

You may think that most of the hotels have their websites and through them you can easily resort to the one that suits you. Many a times this does not work only because these websites display provoking photos and promotional copy. And therefore you need to know the tips that can help you to choose the best Atlantic City hotel, which does not hype but sticks to what it shows on its web site.

Firstly, you should ask yourself what kind of accommodation you would like to have in the Atlantic City and how much is your budget. As this will give you a clear idea about your expectation of the type of hotel you want and accordingly you can make researches.

Secondly, while researching it is important that we look out for the price the hotel is charging. During your searches do not restrict to the top list hotels, search for the aggregate hotels too this will give you a clear picture of the price structure in Atlantic City. You should directly visit the hotels website; this is because most of the hotels provide you the lowest rate, which you not find elsewhere. Also look into the bargain and discount session. These will help you get the best hotel rate.

Thirdly, the major concern after the price is the location of the hotel. When you are looking at the sites of the different hotels of Atlantic City, have look at locations near the hotel. This is because the main reason for choosing a hotel may be for vacation and if there are no good locations nearby most of the time will be spent in travelling and this may also increase the travelling cost for you.

Fourthly, search for the amenities these hotels provide.  You should look for the amenities like restaurants, fitness centre, swimming pool, casinos etc. So that whenever you are in the hotel there is enough for your entertainment.

Lastly, there are star ratings on the websites; these will allow you to give you a clear idea about the services provided by them. Also look at the reviews of the customers, if you are going with the family look out for the special offers and family friendly deals.

The travel business is incredible. It is filled with multiple opportunities for investigation online. Look at the sites dedicated to travel on the web; in magazines; ads on television and radio. Advertisers bombard us with their “Best Price, Exotic Locations and the Hottest Deals”.

When you travel, what are your main concerns? Is it costs; or types of accommodations; or what can we do with the kids? Just to be in a financial position to actually get away for short trips just may be a perk. The internet allows us to DREAM of TRIPS to take!

Todays economy dictates so much of the details a person must consider when planning to travel. Businesses are re-thinking the associated costs of sending associates or sales teams out of the office vs. using new technology to conduct office web-conferences. I want to discuss personal vacations for this article. So my question then is, “Does the internet provide all of the necessary options that will allow us to dream of traveling?”

Searching the web, destinations are bountiful. Where in the United States can we go? Just a click of the mouse can send us skiing in Colorado or Utah; or golfing in Arizona or Florida; or the many parks or natural treasures throughout the states, granting our minds invigorating stimulation. Maybe you want site-see in South America or Australia; run on the Great Wall; tour the vinery’s of Portugal. Now that would be one fabulous trip to take. With technology today, one can ‘see’ any one of these areas in the internet. The mind is unlimited for these trips, your mind.

The volatility of oil prices this year and today due to the supply being greater than demand, provides cost effective options to allow some sort of trip. If you reside in the western portion of the United States, traveling to the Rocky Mountains for skiing is viable. The amount of snow at many resorts has been ahead of years past that powdered eyebrows and ice cycles dangling from one’s nose are truly in reach. Availability at most lodges can still be found even though it may take some researching. But that what makes the internet so impressive. Look on the web for your skiing trip?

Or maybe your idea of getting away would be a warmer climate. I know the older I get, the more warmth I can be surrounded by, the less snappy them ol’ bones become. Weather in the Phoenix/Scottsdale (not to mention the current excitement for their beloved football team) area is perfect for swinging those metal implements of frustration. Or Florida would be more practical due to your proximity. Can you imagine lounging on the beaches along the coast of Florida? With winter weather, imagining can be such a powerful mental exercise. Feeling the comfortable breezes crossing the tops of the ears, the grainy sands captivating your toes and umbrella drinks that color the tongue. Can you just feel it?

Decisions, decisions.

Take a moment to dream of YOUR travel destination. Every site I clicked had many interesting destinations to wander about. One of the places I would love to get to is Portugal. Watching the European Golf Tour, which has a few events there, has tingled my desire to visit. This area of the world just intrigues me. I ‘went’ to Portugal online. What a trip! The scenes of traditional villages; narrow streets winding through vibrant cities; the expanse of vineyards scattered in the country; the views along the Atlantic with dramatic windswept cliffs and sun-drenched backdrops; it is one dream that I am aspiring for.

See how simple the mental imagery and the power of the internet can supplement your actually making a TRIP? No, it’s not like the real thing however; it does provide me the visionary motivation needed to plan my visit, say within two years.

Could a vision of a sunrise conjure serenity within by watching the unwrapping of those brilliant red rock vortexes that reach up from around Sedona, Arizona? The reflection of the reddish cliffs from the waters of Oak Creek at Red Rock Crossing can mysteriously energize the soul. And stimulate the brain. This area truly has mystical sources of energy that could only be found on the prairies after enjoying peyote around the campfire.

Just a few mental exercises like these can plant the seed to plan your vacation whether it is simple or outlandishly exotic. We are not getting any younger. Many places we want to visit and experience before you begin to fill out a ‘Bucket List’ can be within reach. The internet can provide a plan and the mental exercise can be formulated. Now could be a great time to begin that process by getting on-line to start researching ideas. This is the early stages of the planning process and provides us the best time to fantasize about the exotic locations before wandering back to the practical.

Look at a trip you possibly thought of. The web can provide this type of entertainment as we deluge the fantasy of being at that far away place. Maybe our own little “Lost” adventure, only with umbrella drinks, doting pool boys or bikini-clad maidens, clean beaches and those gentle ocean breezes with waves seducing us to sleep. Oh the dreamy thoughts one can conjure up now. Allow your mind to wander. Go to places, mentally, that you have always dreamed about visiting. By taking this first step, the mental vacation, the coming weeks may create a happier time. Because this is all about relaxing.

Now let us look at the coming year. Could there be a short trip in say, your near future. Or maybe a four day outing early in the summer. The ideas may be abundant. Treating ourselves from time to time is necessary when most of what we hear or read is negative. Now with the ‘hope’ that has been touted for nearly two years and put in place this past January 20th, why not hope a vacation is in your future. Some would say that if we all spend a little more money by pumping it in to our economy, things just could get going again. “Hope springs eternal”.

Most people believe they may not be able to participate. Possibly they are choosing to hold out for a period of time till things improve. I say that time may be on your side to plan a vacation. Time may be on your side to save and/or make the money needed to do so. If a second income could encourage a trip; a travel goal within reach; investigate this opportunity and achieve that goal. If your dream trip would be an ultimate goal, it could behoove you to research this opportunity, and you may reach that dream much sooner.

Atlantic City is better than ever!

This fun filled destination, famous for gambling and ritzy casinos, offers great entertainment, good restaurants, shopping, relaxing on the beach, and more. While casino gambling remains its major attraction, the city is intent on becoming a destination that offers fun and excitement for the entire family.

With over 37 million visitors a year, this New Jersey beachfront resort now rivals other major tourist destinations like Las Vegas and Disney world.

It certainly lives up to its motto “Always Turned On!”

Atlantic City has a long and fascinating history.

Dr. Jonathon Pitney originally developed the city as a seaside health resort for

the wealthy residents of Philadelphia. Development as a major resort for the not so wealthy took off significantly after 1854 when Philadelphia investors created a rail line linking Atlantic City with Camden, just across the river from Philadelphia.

It is the real-life model for the board game Monopoly, the nation’s first Boardwalk, the world’s first big Ferris wheel, the first color postcards, and the home of the first Miss America Beauty Pageant.

During prohibition and the depression, Atlantic City was a center for bootlegging, smuggling, speakeasies and illegal gambling. The mafia found Atlantic City to be a good place for profitable business operations and vacationing. The nearby Pine Barrens were convenient and well suited for the mafia’s activities. Because of its seclusion and forest cover, and close proximity to Atlantic City (as well as New York and Philadelphia where many mafia resided), the Pine Barrens proved to be ideal for distilling, bootlegging, and body disposal. In was in Atlantic City where the Mafia established itself as a national organization. Fearing the end of prohibition and the loss of profitable bootlegging operations, Mafia leaders from the Midwest and East Coast, — Al Capone Frank Costello, Meyer Lansky, and Lucky Luciano — held their first national conference in 1929 at the President Hotel. It was here that they were able to develop a system of arbitration and solidify networks made through bootlegging to become a national organization.

With airline travel flourishing and the Caribbean and Florida becoming a magnet for east coast tourists, Atlantic City experienced a decline during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. This phenomenon prompted visionary city officials to seek an alternative draw as they campaigned to get the state to open the city to gambling in the hopes of revitalizing the city and restoring it to its former glory days. With the passage of the Casino Gambling Referendum in 1976, and with the opening of the first casino at Resorts International in 1978, Atlantic City began its resurgence as a major destination for fun and entertainment.

Since then, the City has experienced continued development of hotels, casinos, nite clubs, entertainment, and other fun attractions offering more than casino gambling.

When is the best time to visit?

While there is year round activity, with the summer being the peak season, the more budget minded visitors might consider coming in the winter from January – April, when almost all hotel casinos offer outstanding deals and the facilities are less crowded.

What can families who do not gamble do?

Atlantic City provides lots of entertainment beyond the casinos. Stroll the famous Boardwalk, six miles long and 60 feet wide, paralleling the ocean, it is the largest of New Jersey’s boardwalks. It’s free! Hop on a historic rolling wicker chair and ride in style. The Boardwalk is the place to see and be seen. Forget the calories and indulge in a juicy hot dog with all the trimmings, chewy saltwater taffy and filmy cotton candy.

In the mood for some shopping? Try the Atlantic City Outlets – The Walk. It’s an outlet mecca offering very good shopping from children’s clothing to home decor and jewelry, to quality clothing including Coach, Banana Republic, and Brooks Brothers. Enjoy the many restaurants and clubs located within this complex.

Try the Quarter at the Tropicana, where the streets of Havana come alive, with many unique shops and restaurants, from a burger with the kids to fine dining.

This city boasts the best concentration of first class restaurants in the state, as well as outstanding Philly cheese steak sandwiches, pizza, and family restaurants.

Enjoy a day at the beaches or on the water with a dolphin/whale-watching cruise, parasailing, or a fishing expedition. This destination also offers great ocean fishing and depending on the time of the year, you might catch Marlin, Shark or Tuna.

Check out the Atlantic City Aquarium located in the Historic Gardner’s Basin. It offers a fun and educational look into more than 100 varieties of fish and marine animals.

For golf enthusiasts, there are several championship golf courses nearby, including Blue Heron Pines East and West, The Links at Brigantine Beach, Harbor Pines, Mays Landing Golf and Country Club, Sand Barrens Golf Club, Shore Gate Golf Club and Twisted Dune Golf Club.

The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum offers many attractions including the world’s only wood-carved medieval castle, a roulette wheel made entirely of jellybeans, and a gallery dedicated to disasters and human survival stories.

The Absecon Lighthouse, built in 1857 at 171 feet, is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. You can climb 228 steps for an unbeatable view of the casinos, boardwalk and shoreline.

Travel Pre Internet:

I’ve been travelling for over 40 years – by thumb in my early days, by boots in the Scouts, a Lambretta came next and then my first old banger followed by newer old bangers to the beaches of the Costa Brava.

My thumb, boots, bikes and bangers took me all over Europe and the UK before finding that a charter flight to Spain on an old ‘Connie’ could get me to the beaches and bars a lot quicker and allow more time to enjoy the local travel opportunities by horse and cart and the occasional bus and train.

‘Go West and Prosper’ seemed to be a good idea so instead of taking an 8 hour flight I took an 8 day transatlantic crossing from Tilbury to Montreal on the Stephan Batory of Polish Ocean Lines ensuring that jet lag did not trouble my travel plans. Some years later I crossed the pond again on a ship but this time it was 5 times bigger and I travelled in style on the QE2 and dined in the Queen’s Grill somewhat removed from my earlier experience. I highly recommend ocean voyages but cannot see myself on one of the modern cruise ships going from port to port with constant line-ups to get on and off to buy t-shirts. However, I have done 10 Windjammers and a Star Clipper cruise in the Caribbean which were all memorable (let’s hope Windjammer Barefoot Cruises recover from their woes). But I digress.

I had read that Canada is a spectacular country, from sea to shining sea, and my entrance into the St. Lawrence River to Montreal and then heading west in an old Econoline van from the Great Lakes, across the Prairies to the Rocky Mountains before ending up whale watching off of the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island was a trip of wonder to a bloke from London. Today the scenery is still spectacular and the best way to go is still by road so rent or buy a car, motorhome or motorbike, take the train or tour bus but remember the maps, a fly rod, good boots and take your time.

My favorite part of Canada / USA for adventure travel has to be Northern BC / Alaska, to hike the Chilkoot Trail in the steps of the goldseekers of 1898. The Northwest Territories to canoe the Nahannie River and the Yukon to drive from Dawson City to Chicken, Alaska. If you like the outdoors and can put up with a few bugs, cast a fly and scale a few hills or drive on endless dirt roads sharing the space with moose, caribou, elk, bears and eagles, then these are the places to put on your list. The pleasures and experiences in driving to Inuvik on the Dempster Highway or to Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton Highway or even the Canol Road can only be felt by doing them. I would have mentioned the Alaska Highway but now it is an easy drive unlike the aforementioned.

Today the costs of driving these distances may mean that sharing the journey with others is required, but RVing or simply vanning and camping is a great way to see beyond the horizon. Some enroute adventures now need to be booked in advance whereas when I hiked Denali and the Chilkoot Pass it was just a case of turning up, registering with the local ranger office and heading on out. A little more forward planning is needed for today’s traveller and cost considerations of lengthy flights or drives have to somehow be countered with more careful planning. In the days of reasonable gas prices I would not even consider the driving or flying costs and have driven to Key West from the northwest coast, down the west coast to the Baja and to the west coast from New York. I once even flew my 1946 Fleet taildragger from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back using around 5 gallons an hour of avgas. Before the oil and credit crisis I drove from Rio de Janeiro to Lima, down to Tierra del Fuego and back to Rio covering over 15,000 miles of spectacular scenery and with no consideration about the cost of gas. South America should be on your itinerary too! Some other memorable drives that may now require a mortgage with the gas companies include London to The Nordkapp, Norway, Skippers Canyon in New Zealand and the loneliness of the far north of Australia and the amazing coast of Western Australia stopping by at Monkey Mia and Wave Rock.

We tend to forget that the real cost of travelling is often less today than over the 40 years of my travels. In 1977 my round-trip airfare from Canada to Australia cost over $1700 in 1977 dollars so today it is far cheaper to fly, even with the airlines gouging for fuel, extra baggage, no service and no pleasure. The ‘Big Mac’ method of price comparison as developed by The Economist newspaper gives us a good gauge for most expenditures of today compared to yesterday but my $1500 cost to get a private pilots licence in the 1970’s seems cheap by comparison to today, but obviously not when using this Big Mac principle. Other travel costs are also far cheaper today but this should not mean that travellers should disregard the many methods of saving costs that can then be put to extended or improved travel experiences

Travel Post-Internet:

In my 40 years of travel I have had to use travel agents to make even the simplest of reservations and buy tickets, not even thinking to ask them if they had “been there, done that?” It was just a case of there being no other options to buying travel. Now we have unlimited choices and can seek out better travel agents, better prices, better selections and information about anywhere in the world for our travels – without even leaving home.

The Internet now gives travellers ideas and options of Where to go, When to go, Why to go, What to do, Who to book with and How to save money and offset costs. We can search and find experts for every travel option. If we are comfortable with the Internet we no longer have to go to a travel agent to make reservations and buy tickets except to book with some of the larger travel companies that still produce glossy brochures and offer all inclusive packages or tours that only sell through the agency system. The Internet also allows those of us who are smart enough to know when to seek out a top travel agent with knowledge, experience and expertise (KEE skills) of destinations and activities about where to find them. There is no longer any need to only use our local agents when we can find one somewhere else in the world. When we do not need ‘the knowledge’ and can do it ourselves we simply surf the web so that we can book directly with tour and travel operators wherever we have decided to go.

Some travel agents operate their own tours, some are both wholesale and retail, some limit consumer selection by only selling their ‘preferred’ suppliers and some have professional consultants with years of experience invested in gaining knowledge, experience and expertise and are worth their weight in gold to the savvy traveller. Beware though, as some are also called destination specialists and some of these designations merely require the agent to take a rudimentary test offered by tourism offices, destination marketing groups or even tour operators and in my opinion can harm the reputation of the travel industry. A specialist is not necessarily an expert.

Travel is probably the most used commercial aspect of the Internet and if retail agents want to harness this exciting medium to offer ‘the knowledge’ and their ‘kee’ skills to a global audience, not just their local community, they must embrace the changes that are happening. Travellers now have the ability to seek answers to the 5 W’s of travel and the important ‘How to’ save money and offset costs by having information just a click away.

And then it occurred to me that even internet travel prices often include a commission element even when sold directly to the consumer. If we book directly with operators we should not have to pay full retail prices as we are doing for ourselves what a retail agent would normally do for us. A dilemma for the operator is that to show a both a retail and a cost price option could deter many agents from selling the services as travellers could use an agent for free advice and book directly with the operator to get a ‘net of commission’ price. Obviously this two tier pricing is not often available but travellers who do not need advice should also not be penalized by retail pricing. A new way had to be found and I think I have found it!

The need for fairer fare prices is why I developed the Top Travel Voucher program at The Top Travel Club and I even found a dot com for it. I think that we have been to over a dozen beaches and cities in Florida. It seems to be the place we choose whenever we travel for a number of reasons. Maybe you have a certain destination you love, and like us, want to venture out and try new vacation spots.

Florida has some of the best beaches in the world. You have an array of places to choose from that will provide you different activities, beauty, and fun each time you go. Plus, if you get bored or tired of one coast, which probably won’t happen, try the other coast. The Keys are one vacation spot you must visit at least once.

Perfect for anyone. Whether you are a family taking your children, an older couple taking time together, a group traveling with friends, a student wanting to party on spring break, or a couple wanting to find romance, Florida will offer it all.

Venture off into the woods in one of Florida’s great campgrounds or rent a houseboat for the week. Florida is fairly convenient for everyone for flying and perhaps even driving (depending on what part of country/world you live). We always suggest, and do ourselves, fly down because you get there quicker, and rent a cool car for your vacation. You will have fun touring around town and exploring.

This leads us into our favorite reason… Cost. Traveling to Florida is quite inexpensive. It can be as luxurious as you want, but if you are looking for an affordable vacation, Florida provides that too. If you are like us and on a budget, taking a vacation is something you must plan ahead and save for. Plus, you want to be able to enjoy and do everything possible. If you worry about money the whole time, your vacation becomes less relaxing and stressful. Don’t let that happen. If you can’t afford to visit an exotic island this year, don’t fret, go to Florida and have a wonderful time!!!
